Last month, I was on a panel at UCLA on helping foreign students Navigate the U.S. Job Market, and I met with dozens of great foreign college students.

Here are some of the questions we discussed:

- What has been your experience in hiring international students?

- As an employer, what is the greatest challenge international students face during the job search process?

- What are some general strengths international students possess as an intern and/or employee?

- What are some ways international students can contribute to your organization?

- What top 3 skills / attributes do you think successful employees share?

- How can you tell if an interviewee is interested in the position/company they are applying to?

- How much do tone of voice, body language and grooming play a part in your decision?

- How important is it for the interviewee to be confident in the interview?

- As a counselor, I see a lot of students with soft voices or shyness and I wonder how much does that play a role in your psyche as a recruiter? How could they stand out as competitive applicants to your organization?

- What can international students do to enhance their chances for internship or employment given the competitive job market? How can they stand out? and more ...

À seulement 36 ans, Jean-Marc Dedeyne est de ces jeunes Martiniquais avides d'espace et de découvertes. Fraîchement diplômé à Los Angeles, il constate qu'il n'a plus envie de repartir. Une solution imparable lui vient alors à l'esprit : créer sa propre entreprise! Rencontre.

 

Quand et comment êtes-vous arrivé à Los Angeles ?

À l'âge de 17 ans, une de mes cousines est revenue d'Atlanta. Après avoir partagé ses expériences, elle m'a offert une brochure d'une université Américaine. Ça m'a donné envie de partir aux États-Unis. J'ai cherché à y aller pour y poursuivre mes études, mais les coûts étaient rédhibitoires. Durant les années qui ont suivi, je me suis de plus en plus intéressé à la culture américaine, et plus particulièrement à l'équitation américaine, la musique hip-hop, la langue anglaise et les Américains expatriés à Paris. En 2006, j'ai quitté mon emploi chez HP France pour m'installer à Los Angeles en tant qu'étudiant étranger.
